The International Human Rights Clinic taught jointly by the SAIS International Law & Organizations Program and The Protection Project is designed to teach students skills for careers in international human rights advocacy and protection. These skills are taught through the use of simulations, discussions, case studies, and clinical projects. Each student taking the course has the opportunity to gain practical experience promoting and protecting international human rights through clinical work with The Protection Project.
In the Spring semester 2012, one group of SAIS students in cooperation with students from the legal clinic at the United Arab Emirates University Faculty of Law drafted a Model Law on the Rights of the Elderly. Both projects have been submitted to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in course of the “Public consultation on the human rights of older persons.” Another group of SAIS students wrote a chapter on the rights of vulnerable persons to be included in a teaching manual for law schools in Iraq.
In the Fall semester 2012, SAIS clinical students researched company policies and conducted interviews with private sector representatives to identify best practices in corporate social responsibility. These will be included in The Protection Project’s upcoming publication “100 Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility.”
In the Spring 2013, SAIS students conducted a study tour titled “Protection of Migrant Domestic Workers – Cooperation between Countries of Origin and Countries of Destination.” One group of students traveled to The Philippines, a country of origin of migrant domestic workers, another group of students traveled to Kuwait, a country of destination. In light of the most recent convention of the International Labor Office, Convention No. 189 on decent work for domestic workers, students interviewed government officials, NGO representatives, lawyers, judges, recruitment agencies, university professors, and students, about the mechanisms to protect migrant domestic workers as well as preventive activities. Together with background research, these findings are published in a report on the situation of migrant domestic workers and the legal protection measures available to them.
